The management of hepatitis B during pregnancy remains a challenge and involves careful selection of antiviral medication and assessment of risks and benefits associated with timing of drug administration.

The only two medications for hepatitis B which are pregnancy category B are tenofovir and telbivudine.  Although lamivudine is regarded as safe in clinical experience, it is considered category C based on studies that demonstrate toxicity in animals after first trimester exposure. In addition, it is no longer used as first line treatment in pregnancy due to resistance.  Entecavir and interferon are also pregnancy category C medications.
