Primary care clinicians should take note of small but important changes to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendations on annual influenza vaccination for the 2023-2024 respiratory virus season.
One affects administering the flu shot to your patients with egg allergy and the other describes updates tothe composition of this season's formulation.
Last year getting a flu shot reduced the risk of being hospitalized for the virus or related complications by 40% to 70%. Get an at-a-glance update here; it's time to start prepping your patients.
Influenza vaccination timing for 2023-2024 season.
Flu vaccination should be provided to certain pregnant people and some children in July - August.
The only reason to vaccinate others in July - August is if they will not have access to immunization in September - October.
The H1N1 component of the 2023-2024 influenza vaccine will be updated for egg-based, cell-based, and recombinant formulations.
Influenza vaccines do contain a small amount of egg proteins related to the manufacturing process; ACIP has recommended safety measures for patients with egg allergy in the past.
ACIP has ended the requirement that additional safety measures accompany immunization of persons with egg allergy who are given an egg-based vaccine.
