A recent survey by the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging asked a national sample of adults aged 50 to 80 years about any health conditions they had that benefit from controlling blood pressure (BP) and about their experiences with monitoring blood pressure at home.
The results showed that 60% of respondents reported having one or more BP-related condition or that they take an antihypertensive medication.
In the slides that follow you'll find highlights of the survey findings including the proportion of older adults who use home BP monitoring, why they choose to do so, and for those who are candidates and don't use home monitoring--why?
Among US adults aged 50-80 yrs, 62% were told by a HCP to periodically check BP at home.
Adults aged 50 to 80 years who were told by their HCP to periodically check BP were more likely to use home BP monitoring (62%) vs those who were not told (26%).
Survey respondents with a condition that warranted BP monitoring said they were very concerned10%, somewhat concerned 37%, not very concerned 38% or not at all concerned 15% about their BP.
Age has an impact on use of home BP monitoring, with adults aged 65-80 yrs more likely than those aged 50-64 yrs to monitor BP at home (52% vs 45%).
Owning a home BP monitor doesn't always mean it will be used: 74% of the older adult panel own a BP monitor, 55% use the home BP monitor, 19% own but do not use it.
The reason cited by more than half who did not own a home BP monitor was either it isn't needed or the person never considered it.
50% of regular home-BP users say they share readings with their HCP.
More than half of adults aged 50-80 yrs who could benefit from home BP monitoring do not do it regularly.
1. >60 of adults with a BP-related condition said their motivation for using home BP monitoring was “to be as healthy as possible.” 2. Suggests an opportunity for patient education on how BP control impacts risk for CV events, heart failure, CKD progression. 3. Data from home BP readings open the door for HCP feedback and discussions on how to optimize health.
